The experiment started at about 9pm Saturday night. These evenings in Sacramento were about 45 degrees F. (7C) Condensation formed very quickly on the colander. I think it was made with slightly thinner plastic. |
The
next morning the bowl ice was sitting in about three cups of water, and
the ice had melted away from the sides of the bowl a bit.
The colander seemed to be winning at this stage. What if it was a tie!? |
At 2 pm, the colander seemed far ahead, but it was hard to gauge how much invisible ice was below the surface. This was the same problem the Titanic ran into. |
|
The next morning the bowl ice had almost melted away completely. It lasted until 5pm. The colander wins! If the ice water is allowed to flow away, the ice will melt more slowly! This was not the answer I expected. It seemed like that cold water had a lot of coldness still left in it, and that it should be better to leave in in with the ice. The last of the colander ice lasted until about 3pm the next day. Seven pounds of ice in bowl: 44 hours. Seven pounds of ice in colander: 66 hours. Thank you! |
